§ Why I chose this certification

Ask any working accountant which topic separates people who think they understand accounting from people who actually do, and you will get the same answer: debits and credits. It is the grammar of the entire language of business. Journal entries, ledgers, trial balances, financial statements — every one of them is built from the same small set of rules, applied without exception, millions of times a day, in every business on earth.

So when I decided to add a professional certification to my college education, I deliberately chose the one that tests this foundation rather than something fashionable on top of it. AccountingCoach — the platform founded by Harold B. Averkamp, CPA, MBA — has spent decades as one of the most trusted names in accounting education, precisely because it teaches these fundamentals with unusual clarity. Its Certificate of Achievement is not a participation badge; it requires passing a proper examination of the material.

§ What the exam covered

The Introductory Accounting & Bookkeeping examination — topic: debits and credits — tested the core of the core. The rules of debits and credits for every account type: assets, liabilities, equity, revenue and expenses. The logic of double-entry bookkeeping, where every transaction is recorded twice, once as a debit and once as a credit, so the books always balance. The mechanics of T-accounts, journal entries and the trial balance. And the behaviour of the accounting equation, the identity that everything else protects — the subject of my second AccountingCoach certification.

I have written a plain-language article about exactly this material — Understanding Debits and Credits: The Language of Accounting — because teaching it is the best way I know to keep it sharp. The article, like the certification, comes from a simple conviction: the person who truly owns the fundamentals never fears the advanced material built on top of them.

§ How it fits the bigger plan

This certification is one piece of a mapped route. My BS Accounting & Finance studies at IMSciences Peshawar sit on the ACCA track, with the degree’s exemptions shortening the distance to the professional qualification. Every layer I add now strengthens that trajectory: college distinctions proved the work ethic; the AccountingCoach certifications prove the professional fundamentals; the technology certifications prove the modern edge; and the LearnFinity platform proves I can turn knowledge into products.

There is also a philosophical reason I value this particular certificate. The exam is grounded in the same traditions behind GAAP and the international framework of IFRS and IAS standards: rules that must be applied consistently, records that must balance, and reporting that must be honest. Whether the future brings paper ledgers, ERP dashboards or blockchain-based triple-entry accounting, those principles do not change — only the tools do.

§ From certified to teacher

The most valuable outcome of this certification is what it lets me give away. In my accounting tuition sessions, the students who struggle most are almost always the ones whose debits-and-credits foundation has gaps. We rebuild it properly — with T-accounts, real transactions and lots of practice — and then the rest of the syllabus stops feeling like magic and starts feeling like logic.

That transformation, from confusion to confidence, is the entire reason I teach. This certificate is my licence for it.
