D.Com 1st Year Excellence — 2nd position in college
First year of the Diploma of Commerce: the year accounting, commerce and statistics stopped being subjects and became a way of thinking. This certificate is where the journey officially began.
§ Choosing commerce — on purpose
After completing Matriculation in the Science Group with an A grade in 2024, I had the usual options in front of me. I chose the road less travelled by my classmates: the Diploma of Commerce (D.Com) at the Government College of Commerce (College of Management Sciences-II), Ring Road Peshawar. Where a generic intermediate programme gives a broad sampling of everything, D.Com commits — from day one — to the professional world of business, commerce, economics and accounting. That commitment matched mine.
I wanted a qualification that leads somewhere specific: to Chartered Accountancy, to finance, to the management of real organisations. Every subject in that first year felt like a piece of a bigger map — and I treated it that way, studying with the end goal in sight rather than for the next exam alone.
§ The subjects that built the foundation
The first-year curriculum laid down the technical bedrock of the profession. Financial Accounting-I introduced the logic that now organises my entire field of study: every transaction recorded not once but twice, debits and credits in permanent conversation, the accounting equation always in balance. Fundamentals of Commerce-I zoomed out to the systems level — trade, business organisation, banking, and the commercial institutions that move an economy.
Two first-year performances deserve special mention. In Computer Applications to Commerce, I scored 92 out of 100 — the meeting point of my two diplomas, where commerce problems met computing solutions. And in Business Mathematics & Statistics, I scored 90 out of 100, a subject I now teach to other students. Numbers tell stories; that year I learned how to read them, and later how to help others do the same.
§ Doing it while doing DIT
What the certificate cannot show is the context. This same year, I was also studying for the first term of my Diploma in Information Technology — ICT, MS Office, networks, operating systems and programming. Two programmes meant two sets of classes, two exam seasons, and a calendar with no empty corners.
Looking back, that overlap was a hidden gift. The two diplomas kept explaining each other: accounting gave technology a purpose, and technology gave accounting a speed and reach that pen and paper never could. That is precisely the combination I now bring to my tech-for-accounting sessions and to everything I build.
§ Why it still matters
First-year excellence is not about one result — it is about trajectory. The habits built in that year carried me through the final year, through the Convocation Award, and into the BS Accounting & Finance programme at IMSciences Peshawar, where my degree carries 9 ACCA paper exemptions. The fundamentals I secured here — double-entry thinking, commercial literacy, quantitative confidence — are the same ones I teach my own students today.
If you are a student at the start of a commerce diploma, here is the honest advice I give every one of my students: master the first year, because everything afterwards stands on it. The concepts compound — just like interest, just like effort.
