D.Com Final Year Excellence — 2nd position in college

The final year of the Diploma of Commerce is where the material gets genuinely hard — advanced accounting, economics, and commerce theory at their deepest. Finishing it with the 2nd position in college, while shipping software on the side, is the achievement I am proudest of.

§ The year everything got serious

If the first year of the Diploma of Commerce was about foundations, the final year was about force. The curriculum shifted decisively toward the professional core: Financial Accounting-II deepened the double-entry discipline into complete accounting cycles and financial statements; Principles of Economics trained the lens outward, onto markets, prices, demand, and the macro forces that shape every business decision; and Fundamentals of Commerce-II completed the commercial picture.

The final year is also when a diploma stops being a list of subjects and becomes an integrated understanding. A transaction in my mind now travels the full distance: from an invoice, through journal entries and ledgers, into a trial balance and finally the financial statements — while the economist in me asks what the numbers mean, and the DIT-trained part of me thinks about how software would record it all automatically.

§ Computerised accounting: 95/100

The crown of my final year was Computerised Accounting — 95 out of 100, my highest single subject score across the entire D.Com programme. This is the subject where my two diplomas literally merged: accounting entries meets accounting software, journals meet databases, and the manual cycle I had learned by hand is executed at digital speed.

I love this subject for a specific reason: it is the honest preview of my professional future. Modern accounting runs on software — from small-business bookkeeping packages to full ERP suites — and the accountant who understands both the accounting logic and the system behaviour is the one who gets trusted with the important work. Scoring 95 here felt less like passing an exam and more like receiving permission for what comes next.

The result: with strong finals across the board — including Fundamentals of Commerce-II at 80/100 — I closed the D.Com with the 2nd position in my college, recognised with the Academic Excellence Certificate below, and an overall diploma total of 1,056 out of 1,400.

§ The busiest year — by design

Context matters for this award. The final D.Com year overlapped with the most demanding stretch of everything else: completing the DIT, earning technology certificates, and — together with my brother — building and refining our first shipped product, Handy Tools. Most nights, textbooks and code editors shared the same desk.

I will not romanticise it; there were genuinely difficult weeks. But that period taught me the management skill no course teaches: protecting the important from the merely urgent. Planning the week on Sunday, triaging tasks like a good accountant triages invoices, and reviewing what went wrong each Friday — a small personal audit system. It kept two demanding programmes and a product launch from collapsing into each other, and it is a system I still use and now teach to students.

§ Where this award led

Finishing D.Com with distinction unlocked the next stage exactly as planned: admission to the BS Accounting & Finance programme at IMSciences Peshawar — KPK’s top-ranked institute and an ACCA-accredited one, where my degree carries 9 ACCA paper exemptions. The final-year award certificate and the overall-excellence Convocation Award that followed it are the two documents that closed my diploma chapter and opened the degree chapter.

For students currently in the final year of a commerce programme, my message is simple: this is the year that decides how quickly the next door opens. Treat it like the qualification it is, not the formality it looks like.
